Apollinaris Apollinaris is a brand of mineral water (marketed as the "Queen of Table Waters") that comes from Germany. It is still sold in Europe today, and used to be widely available in the United Kingdom. ![]() ![]()
![]() Caley's of Norwich Caleys' of Norwich began in 1857 when Albert Jarman Caley opened a chemists shop in Norwich, six years later in 1863 he began to manufacture mineral water first from his chemists shop, nd later from a factory. In 1883 the firm began to manufacture drinking chocolate, and in 1886 chocolate itself. Now being run by a second generation as A.J. Caley & Sons Ltd the firm adds christmas crackers to its portfolio in 1898. The business was purchaced by John Mackintosh & Sons Ltd of Halifax in 1932. In 1969 Rowtree Mackintosh is formed by merger. In 1988 this business is bought by Nestle. Finally in 1996 Nestle sell the brand name (& equipment) to a management buyout team eho begin to revive and expand the brand. The pictures were provided by Paul Broomfield ![]() I can find no information on this company ![]() Griffin Woodcock & Co The firm was based in the village of Hazelwell which is now part of Tunbridge (or Tonbridge) Wells. ![]() Idris Drinks Company The company was formed in 1873 by Thomas Howell Williams who had changed his mane to Thomas Idris (apparently as he was overcome with the beauty of the Idris Mountians in Wales). The firm produced soft drinks and mineral water, and the brand was purchaced in 1987 by Britvic who still make the ginger beer today ![]() Jewsbury & Brown This company was a Manchester Pharmaceutical Chemists that supplied various items such as mineral waters and toothpaste powder. The first two match strikers use a very similar design, but differ in colour. The white one shows a Royal Warrant to Her Majesty the Queen, and the Pink Purveyors by Appointment to His Magisty the King. The second pair of match striker shown are poor condition, with bad staining from years underground. The transfer printed detail has also worn off and been restored, so whether the original colours have been used in uncertain. ![]() Mumbys, Portsmouth Judging from the number of empty bottles availabe for sale this firm was a promenant one (and had royal warrents) but I can find no details about it ![]() Parker Brothers, Drighlington I can find no information on this company ![]() A & R Thwaites & Co This company originates in Ireland in 1769 founded by Augustine Thwaite whose son had developed Soda water while studying medicine at Trinity College. It later became part of the Cantrell & Cochrane Group which was founded in Belfast in 1852 by apothecary Dr. Thomas Cantrell and Alderman Cochrane (later Lord Mayor of Dublin). After World War I other factories were established in London, Stockport and Glasgow. In 1968 the Cantrell and Cochrane group was acquired by Allied Breweries (now Allied Domecq) and Guinness. ![]() Walker Taylor Mineral Water
