Company History

Arkinstall & Son Ltd operated from the Trent Bridge Pottery and later the Arcadian Works (1904-1924) in Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire.

They were taken over by the firm of Robinsons & Leadbeater in 1908, and later by Cauldon Ltd in 1925 but continued to trade under the Arcadian name.

Although not as finely made or detailed as the leading producer of crested ware, Goss, Arcadian was a well known producer of crested china from 1900 to 1939.

Crested Match Strikers

The firm produced crested china for the souvenir trade, but also produced match strikers that are nearly identical to those of Wiltshaw & Robinson (Carlton Ware). The first four images below show Arcadian match strikers, the fifth a comparable Carlton Ware example. This illustrates the difficulty in identifying the manufacturer of unmarked examples
