Company History The firm was founded as L. A. Birks & Co between 1894 to 1896, by Lawrence, Arthur Birks, Charles Frederick Goodfellow, and the owner of the Vine Pottery in Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire, Adolphus Joseph Rawlins. The firm then became Birks, Rawlins and Co (Ltd) in 1900 after the departure of Charles Goodfellow in 1898. In 1928 the firm was bought by Wiltshaw & Robinson, and became a decorating business only and was finally closed down in 1933. Marks This mark is from the Birks, Rawlins & Co period and therefore dates between 1900 and 1933. The mark shows that the match striker was part of the firms Savoy Crest China range, intended to compete with the likes of Goss, Carlton and Arcadian crested ware. ![]() Crested Match Striker with Ashtray The match striker shown below carries the crest for Tonbridge School, and it's motto 'Deus Pat Incrementum' . The striker is designed to hold a matchbox with slots on the side so matches can be struck on it. The base forms an ashtray. ![]() |
