Crested Match Strikers (also known as Heraldic or Coat-of-Arms Match Strikers) represent a particular area of collecting that might be of interest. This section of the Match Striker Gallery brings together the crested match strikers from the rest of the site into one easy to access subsection. Just click on the links panel on the right hand side of the page to view the different types of crested match strikers, or click on the 'Homepage' link to return to the main site. One of the Most difficult aspects of collecting crested ware in general is identifying what a particular crest represents. With luck the name will be somewhere on the item , either as part of the crest (like the Sunderland match striker below), or perhaps on the base (like the Queens College, Oxford match striker below). ![]() Alternatively there may be a motto which can be used to help identify the crest, for example I was unable to identify the first Rossal School match striker shown below, until I came across a second one which featured the school motto,"Mens Agitat Molem", or "Mind Moves Matter". ![]() Finally if all else fails you can try looking at various heraldry sites on the Internet, using Google or any other search engine. One site I find very useful is given below Bozzle.com This website has a great range of heraldic material, such as Cambridge and Oxford University crests, and explanations of various heraldic terms. It's the best first stop if you pick up an unknown crested match striker. |
