Company History
The firm of Ralph Hammersley began to work from the Church Bank Works in Tunstall, Staffordshire, England from around 1860-83 (this pottery had previously been taken by the earlier partnership of Eardley & Hammersley). They took a second works in around 1880 in the shape of the Overhouse Pottery in Burslem, Staffordshire, England. A third works was also operated from a brief period at the Black Works, Tunstall, Staffordshire, England between about 1885 and 1888. Ralph's son Thomas joined the business in 1884 changing it's name to Ralph Hammersley & Son. The firm then carried on until 1905. Marks ![]() Advertising Match Strikers The match striker shown below advertises Mountain Dew, a scotch whiskey. Early advertising suggests it may originally have been a single malt type made by Sanderson's, but which later became a blend produced by the Robertson, Sanderson & Co who operated from Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland. This company was taken over by Distillers Ltd in 1923, but I am unsure if any of their brands were continued. ![]() |
