There are a few places on the web that have images and information
about match strikers. Here are some links (in the order in which the
web masters said I could include them). Note that I have no experience
of any commercial aspects of of the websites listed below.
Absinthiana One of a number of websites dedicated to absinthe, toxic (it contained wormwood which has hallucinogenic properties) drink of the jazz age. Some great advertising pyrogenes are on show (direct link: Pyrogenes) Absinthe Barware This website is mainly a commercial one selling stuff for absinthe drinkers, but they do have some original 'Pyrogenes' on show as well (direct link here: Pyrogenes) Advertising Antiques Website This web site is mainly dedicated to collectors of old enamel advertising signs, but also deals with other advertising wares. The two link will take you direct to the match strikers section, but have a look around the main site as well! (Wheetam Match Striker Collection, Other Match Strikers) Antique Bottles A website dedicated to collectors and diggers of old bottles in South Africa. This site has lots of great info and images, and has a section dedicated to match strikers (select Categories... Earthenware... Matchstrikers to get straight there). Bottle Bills Bottle Dump A website dedicated to collectors and diggers of antique bottles and jars, this site is interesting reading as one of the other things to turn up in old rubbish dumps is match strikers (there is a section dedicated to them on here too). Bozzle.com This website has a great range of heraldic material, such as Cambridge and Oxford University crests, and explanations of various heraldic terms. It's the best first stop if you pick up an unknown crested match striker. The Canadian Anglo-Boer War Museum This web site features a bunch of information on the Boer war and it's connection to Canada. This includes some nice match strikers (the following link takes you directly to them: Boer War Match Strikers ) but do have a look at the rest of the site to. Carltonware.com A great Carlton Ware site, with information on the history of Wiltshaw & Robinson, Carlton Ware shape & patterns, dating Carlton Ware and the opportunity to register to receive newsletters on the subject (and an archive of the old ones too) The Cloud Glass Reference Site This is an interesting web site for those interested in Davidson's Cloud Glass (and Cloud Glass from other less well known manufacturers. A few examples might be of interest to those match striker collectors (direct links to 'Davidson' match striker & Ashtray and Davidson Pullmatch holders). Denis Alsford's Match Holders A web site in memory of the collector of match holders Denis Alsford who died in 2004 and who authored one of the few books on the subject Dunville's Whisky Collectibles A site dedicated to collectible memorabilia for Dunville's Whiskey, which includes a couple of match strikers. The site also features the history of the Dunville family etc French Beer & Breweriana This web site is dedicated to collectibles etc relating to the French brewing industry. It has a section dedicated to match strikers (or pyrogenes). Most of the site is in English, but there is a bit of French text too. Gouda-Design This is a fascinating site about Art Deco and Art Nouveau Dutch Gouda Art Pottery and Delft Ware. There is plenty of information about the history of the factories, marks, designers, images etc. Oxford High Street This website of Stephanie Jenkins provides a fascinating look at Oxford High street throughout the ages, with photographs and pictures of the buildings, and information on their occupants in the present and the past. She also describes how and when buildings were demolished to allow the street to evolve and change. This site is of interest to match striker collectors for the information it provides on the retailers such as tobacconists, cigar merchants and outfitters who supplies one of the two main universities (the other being Cambridge) whose alumni would have bought crested match strikers celebrating their colleges or University. The Virtual Absinthe Museum This website is dedicated to Absinthe, and has a great section on match strikers advertising this once forbidden drink (and the rest of the site is well worth a look too !). |
