Books about Match
Strikers
I have not come
across many books that are specifically about match
strikers, however there are two that I've read...
Collectable Match-Holders from Bryant & May with price guide by Bob Swithenbank (ISBN 0-905111-12-5, published in 2004) This 120 page book is an extremely comprehensive guide to (just about) all the vesta cases, metal match boxes, wall mounted match holders and match strikers manufactured for and by the Bryant & May match company (chapter 5 is my favorite). As well as pictures of the items, the book is also illustrated by old adverts etc for Bryant & Mays products. This is very much a 'must buy' for anybody interested in the company, and I'd recommend it to any one with a general interest in match strikers as well. Collectible Match Holders for Tabletops and Walls by Jean & Frank Hunting (Schiffer Publishing Ltd, 1989) This 160 page book contains a lot of pictures of match strikers, mainly from America, together with a price guide. It also has information on the strikers pictured as well as the history of matches and match strikers. Identifying Pottery
Marks
There are many
books on pottery marks & factories, however some that I can reccomend are:
Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks by Geoffrey A. Godden (Barrie & Jenkins, 2003) A huge work, with almost every factory you want to know about in it. The listings are in alphabetical order, and require you to know a factories trade name (e.g. that Carlton Ware was made by Wiltshaw & Robinson) to easily look things up. Miller's Pottery & Porcelain Marks by Gordon Lang (Miller's, 2003) An ideal small book to carry with you, featuring marks from across the world. Entries are arranged in groups such as initials, monograms etc so it is easy to look up an unknown mark. An index is also provided so you can go straight to a known maker. Miller's Twentieth Century Ceramics (Revised Edition) By Paul Atterbury, Ellen Paul Denker & Maureen Batkin (Miller's 2005) This is an excellent book on British and North American ceramic factories of the 20th Century, with history about the factories, old adverts, examples of wares etc. It's an ideal introduction to modern ceramics, and features many factories that made match strikers. |
