Company History The company was originally known as Rathbone, Smith & Co, and operated from the Soho Pottery works in Tunstall from 1883 to 1897. The ownership of the firm changed, and it was renamed Smith and Binnall from 1897 to 1900, before changing again in 1901 to Soho Pottery Ltd. The firm then moved to the Elder Works in Cobridge, Stoke on Trent in 1906 where they operated until 1944. The firm then changed hands again becoming Simpsons (Potters) Ltd in 1944 and continued to operate until 2004 . Marks Early marks from 1901 to 1906 refer to the Tunstall location of the pottery. Later marks from 1906 to 1922 refer to the potteries new Cobridge location. The Solian Ware trade name also helps date the mark as it was first introduced in 1913. The mark shown below probably dates between 1913 and 1944. ![]() Matchbox and Cigarette Holder
