Company History

The firm was founded 1867 by G. T Allen as the Watcombe Terra-Cotta Clay Co in St Marys Church, South Devon.  Initially it sold the local terracotta clay and later a pottery was established to produce puts, busts etc.

The firm later merged with the Royal Aller Vale Pottery in 1901, to form Royal Aller Vale & Watcombe Pottery Co (trading under the Devon or Motto Ware brands) which finally ceased trading in 1962.

Marks

In addition to the simple written and impressed (sorry about the poor photo but this was the best I could get) marks shown here the firm used a printed mark featuring a woodpecker.

Ball style match strikers

This simple ball style match striker was produced in a number of colours in addition to the red/pink shown here (I have seen green and blue examples too).

Other Match Strikers

The first match striker has the legend "A match for any man" running around the base (this is found on other design of match striker by the firm as well). The second image is of what I believe to be Royal Aller Vale match striker (although the impressed mark is faint so it is impossible to be certain).
